Prevalence and distribution of odontogenic cysts in Sicily: 1986-2005.
2008
The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of odontogenic cysts (OCs) in Sicily and evaluate their distribution during a 20-year period. A cross-sectional retrospective study was carried out in 1,310 cysts of the jaw diagnosed in 12,197 individuals, who consecutively attended the Odontostomatologic Clinic of Palermo from 1986 to 2005. 1,273 cysts were classified as odontogenic, whereas only 37 were non-odontogenic. In the former group, the most frequent lesions were radicular cysts (84.5%), followed by dentigerous OCs (11.4%). Inflammatory radicular cysts were observed more in male gender, younger age at diagnosis and anterior maxilla as site of presentation. Unlike dentigerou…
Recurrence rate of odontogenic keratocyst treated by enucleation and peripheral ostectomy: Retrospective case series with up to 12 years of follow-up
2018
Background Odontogenic keratocysts have been reported with high recurrence rates in the literature so various treatment modalities from simple enucleation to resection have been performed to achieve the cure. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the recurrence rate of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) treated by enucleation and peripheral ostectomy. Material and Methods An electronic search of the database of the Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pathology, was undertaken to identify patients histologically diagnosed with OKCs treated at Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery between 2001 and 2015. Results In total, 81 patients were studied. T…
Retrospective clinicopathological study of 418 odontogenic cysts
2010
Objectives: To determine the relative incidence of odontogenic cysts and to identify the main clinicopathological features among patients treated in the Oral Surgery Department of the Dental Clinic of the University of Barcelona (Spain). Study design: A retrospective observational study was made of 418 odontogenic cysts diagnosed in 380 patients included in the database of 1235 histopathological diagnoses. The subjects were treated in the Master degree program of Oral Surgery and Implantology of the University of Barcelona in the period 1997-2006. The following variables were recorded: gender, age, clinical characteristics of the lesions (size and location), radiological features, duration,…
Immunohistochemical comparative study of the odontogenic keratocysts and other odontogenic lesions
2009
Objectives: The present study was undertaken to compare the pattern of expression of EGFR, cyclin D1, Ki-67, p-53 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the epithelial lining of odontogenic keratocysts, dentigerous cysts, radicular cysts and ameloblastomas. Methods: four micrometers, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections from 11 odontogenic keratocysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, 10 radicular cysts and 10 ameloblastomas were immunohistochemically studied. Results: There were statistically significant differences between cyclin D1 expression in odontogenic keratocysts and radicular cysts (p= 0.001) and ameloblastomas (p= 0.04). The differences in CEA expression between the four studied…
Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma arising from an odontogenic keratocyst: case series and literature review
2020
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features of primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma arising from an odontogenic keratocyst (PIOSCC ex OKC) and comprehensively improve the understanding of this disease. Material and Methods We retrospectively investigated five cases of PIOSCC ex OKC at Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology. We also conducted a systematic review of studies on PIOSCC ex OKC by using online databases from their inception until February 2020. Results In our series of five cases, all lesions were located in the mandible. Three cases (60%) showed recurrent OKCs and two cases (40%) showed primary OKCs. During the follow-…
Keratocystic odontogenic tumor: A biopsy service’s experience with 104 solitary, multiple and recurrent lesions
2016
Background Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is a clinically significant cystic lesion of odontogenic origin. This study aimed to retrospectively review and describe the clinicopathologic features of KCOT and to objectively compare the clinical and histological features of solitary, multiple and recurrent KCOT in a Saudi Arabian population. Material and Methods Biopsy request forms, pathology records and archival materials (all histological slides) of 104 cases of KCOT from 75 patients were retrieved. Demographic and clinical details as well as histological evaluation were analyzed and compared between the 3 groups using chi-squared or Mann-Whitney tests of association as appropriate. R…
Immunohistochemical analysis of the patterns of p53 and PCNA expression in odontogenic cystic lesions
2008
Objective: the role of p53 expression in odontogenic lesions has not been fully determined, but has been associated with cell proliferation. The purpose of this study was to analyze p53 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression in 4 different odontogenic lesions. Design: expression of p53 and PCNA was analyzed in radicular and dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, and calcifying odontogenic cysts (Gorlin cysts) using monoclonal antibodies for detection of p53 and PCNA. Results: PCNA expression was significantly greater in the basal layer of radicular cysts and in the suprabasal layer of odontogenic keratocysts; the percentage of p53 positive cells was significantly grea…
Recurrence of odontogenic keratocysts and possible prognostic factors : review of 455 patients
2019
Background To describe epidemiological features of 565 Chinese patients with odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), to investigate possible prognostic factors related to recurrence, and to analyse features of recurrent OKC (rOKC). Material and Methods A retrospective chart review of 565 cases of OKC treated between 2003 and 2015 was undertaken. The probability of recurrence related to prognostic factors including large size, cortical perforation combined with involved teeth in the lumen of the cyst, inflammation, sites of the involved lesion, sex, and daughter cyst variables were analysed. The subsequent relapse of each OKC was compared. Results Patients ranged in age from 7 to 81 years (mean age, …
Demographic profile of oral nonodontogenic cysts in a Brazilian population
2013
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and demographic characteristics of oral non- odontogenic cysts (ONOC) in a Brazilian population over a 53-year period and to compare this data with the literature. Study D esign: A total of 20.391 biopsies records were evaluated, from April/1959 to August/2012. Cases of oral developmental cysts were selected. Data regarding age, gender, time of evolution, and anatomic site of all cases were collected. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Among 20.391 oral biopsies, 71 (0.35%) met the criteria of ONOC. Females accounted for 50.70% of all cases. The mean age observed was 38.14 years (range: 5-88 years). …
Accuracy of computer-aided image analysis in the diagnosis of odontogenic cysts: A systematic review
2020
Background This study aimed to search for scientific evidence concerning the accuracy of computer-assisted analysis for diagnosing odontogenic cysts. Material and Methods A systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA statements and considering eleven databases, including the grey literature. Protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD 42020189349). The PECO strategy was used to define the eligibility criteria and only studies involving diagnostic accuracy were included. Their risk of bias was investigated using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tool. Results Out of 437 identified citations, five papers, published between 2006 and 2019, fulfilled the criteria and were i…
